Types of Elder Abuse

Federal definitions of elder abuse were outlined in amendments to the Older Americans Act in 1987 to help established guidelines to help recognize and address the problem of elder abuse. The National Center on Elder Abuse has identified three basic categories of abuse:

  • Domestic elder abuse is basically when someone known to the elder person, typically a relative, engages in mistreatment in either the elder person's home or in the home of a caregiver.
  • Institutional elder abuse occurs when the mistreatment occurs in a residential home for the elderly. Those who commit institutional elder abuse are typically employed by residential facilities and are contractually obligated to provide proper care and attention.
  • Self-neglect or self-abuse is when the elderly individual is either incapable or unwilling to fully care for their own welfare

While there are sadly no reliable statistics giving a full indication of the frequency of elder abuse in the country, the National Center on Elder Abuse has detected a rapidly increasing trend of mistreatment of or elderly. If you are an elderly person experiencing abuse, know that we are concerned about your dignity and security. It is crucial that you contact a compassionate and knowledgeable lawyer from our firm as soon as possible to protect your rights and to help ensure your dignity.
